With the New Year approaching, we're all thinking about what we're going to do with our "fresh start." What kind of feelings does the New Year bring up for you? Are you excited or freaked out? Are you hanging on for dear life or ready to attack whatever 2019 has in store for you? I'm going to give you something to consider as you make plans for creating new, healthier habits.
THAT ONLY HABITS THAT ARE AUTOMATIC ARE THE ONES THAT KEEP YOU IN HOMEOSTASIS
What is homeostasis? It's defined as "a relatively stable state of equilibrium or a tendency toward such a state..." For example, your body regulates body temperature to maintain a stable 98.2 degrees F by making or releasing heat. It does this automatically, without any effort or conscious thought. Similarly, the habit of "stress eating" is caused by your body's hormone response to stress, which causes cravings for foods high in fat and sugar. These foods do help to reduce or stop the production of the stress hormones, so they really are "comfort foods." When this response is successful at bringing your body back to a state of stress-hormone-free homeostasis, your body sees that as a good, and easy fix! So, when faced with stress, you will automatically respond by eating. You don't have to make a conscious thought about it or even be hungry, your body will tell you what to do.
Disappointing as it may be, if you want to BREAK the habit of stress eating, you WILL have to make a conscious effort to replace eating with another helpful and stress-relieving habit. That habit will ALWAYS require concerted action on your part to maintain.
You see where I'm going with this....healthy habits are almost ALWAYS going to require effort and choice. Getting up at 5am to get your workout in will NEVER be automatic - sorry to break it to you. But, being aware of this gives you power. Don't expect the lifestyle you want to come easily. You will have to work for it. You will have to have your workout clothes ready the night before. You will have to prepare snacks and healthy meals ahead of time so you don't end up eating fast food for lunch. You will have to have a plan A and plan B for not missing a workout. You will have to take time to plan your day or your week so that you go into each week prepared to kick ass. Make the choice, put in the effort, do the work, and REAP THE REWARDS.
